Metal chain-link fences are durable and let light in, but they lack privacy. Instead of replacing your chain-link fence with a privacy fence, the easiest and least expensive way to give your yard more privacy is to grow vines on the metal fence. Use a metal fence as a trellis and train vines to cover the fence.
Check the fence for security; fence posts should not wobble, and the fence itself should be free of breaks. Repair any damaged fencing.
Prepare the soil around the fence where you want the plants to grow. Loosen the soil with a shovel or tiller. Mix compost into the excavated soil.
Select plants that grow in your climate zone. Read the vine's care tag to find out if the vine grows in your location.
Dig holes for potted vines following the plant's care tag. Dig the holes at least a few inches away from the fence and as deep as the roots of the vine go.
Gently separate the roots of the vine. Set the vine plant into the hole, pointing the top of the vine toward the fence so that it latches onto the fence as it grows. Cover the roots with soil. Water the plant thoroughly.
Press plant seeds into the soil a few inches from the fence, following the seed's packaging. Make sure the seed is covered, then water and keep the soil moist for germination. Once the vine plant starts to grow, train the vine onto the fence by gently setting the top of the vine against the fence.
Water the plant vines following the care instructions. Some vines may need trimming during growth to keep a maintained appearance. Trim back perennial vines after the plant's flowers have died back or during the winter.
